Smaller, enthusiast-focused motherboard makers were grabbing all the headlines a few years ago. Nowadays, Abit no longer even sells motherboards, and we seldom hear the DFI name anymore. This could all end with DFI pulling out of the mobo market—so says SemiAccurate, quoting both the rumor mill and its own, anonymous sources.
The site claims DFI will pull out of the consumer motherboard market next month, letting inventory run out before shifting focus to the `industrial PC business.` Why the change? DFI is a `relatively small player` in the high-end motherboard market, SemiAccurate points out, and the firm purportedly gets the short end of the stick when it comes to supply allocation from chipset vendors.
If DFI leaves the market in January, it could be with more of a bang than a whimper. Newegg currently lists five AMD boards and 21 Intel boards with the DFI label on them, and all but two of those are in stock. Prices range up to 9.99 for a high-end LGA775 offering with green expansion slots, and the lineup includes some unusual designs, like a Mini-ITX P55 motherboard for Intel`s latest Core i5 and i7-800 CPUs.
Abit, by contrast, didn`t have much of a presence left by the time rumors of its demise gained momentum. On December 19, 2008, a similar search found only a single new, retail-boxed Abit board in stock at Newegg.
